Adopt a Pet

Adoption Process

To adopt a pet, an adoption application needs to be filled out by all interested parties; it is then reviewed by the Adoption Specialist for approval. We've been adopting successfully throughout the area for the last 45 years including Brunswick, Sea Island, St. Simons Island, Savannah, and even Jacksonville, Florida.

Each adoption is different and each animal has different needs. Some pet adoptions may be approved immediately, where the animal can go home to his/her forever family that same day. Adopting a pet may require additional time or special arrangements that could take several days.

Our goal is to find the best fit for each animal, and we appreciate your patience and support in this effort. A home visit may be requested to determine if a home is suitable for the animal.

We often get several applications for individual animals and our process may take a few days to determine the best fit. Download and print the Adoption Application and Agreement by clicking on the red link below, or fill out and submit the Adoption Application and Agreement form online immediately - see below. We will process your application and be in contact with you within 72 hours.

Thank you for adopting a pet from the Humane Society of South Coastal Georgia! Adopting a pet is a lifetime commitment. PLEASE READ THE INFORMATION BELOW carefully, check the boxes stating "I understand this policy", and electronically sign below in compliance. If you have any questions, please ask one of our adoption counselors; they will be happy to give you any information you need to properly care for your new pet. An adoption counselor will review your application and respond within 72 hours. The Humane Society of South Coastal Georgia has the right to refuse any adoption.

At the Humane Society of South Coastal Georgia, the adoption cost for a dog is $100 and the adoption cost for a cat is $75. We send a bag of Science Diet Puppy or Adult Dog, Cat or Kitten food home with you and your new adopted pet. Additional costs for a pet will include: collar, leash, vaccinations, veterinary care, fencing, shelter, treats, toys, food, litter, crates, etc. A larger dog may cost upwards of $700 to $1000 per year to maintain. A single cat may cost in excess of $300 per year to maintain. All dogs must not leave without a collar and leash; and all cats must not leave without a cat carrier.

All of our dogs are microchipped, vaccinated, spayed or neutered, given a Capstar to treat any fleas and ticks, given Heartgard heartworm preventative monthly, and are tested for heartworms. If a dog is heartworm positive, we have a foster-to-adopt program that allows you to take a dog home while it is still being treated. Speak to our counselor for more information about our foster-to-adopt program. If a puppy is too young to receive its rabies vaccinations while it is with us, at the time of adoption we will schedule an appointment with you to vaccinate your new puppy when he/she is old enough.

All of our cats are microchipped, spayed or neutered, given a Capstar to treat any fleas and ticks, and are tested for heartworms (HTWM), feline leukemia (FELV) and feline aids (FIU). If a cat is heartworm positive, it is not contagious to other cats, but you should consult your vet for advice. If a cat is FIU positive, it must not be exposed to other cats because FIU is contagious, but only to other cats.

You are now responsible for your new pet. We are looking for a lifetime guardian for all pets leaving our adoption center. The next several weeks will require patience on your part. The pet you are adopting will not adjust to its new home in just one or two days. Some behavior problems may take several months to work on. It would be best to approach this animal as if it had received no prior training. With the adoption of a kitten or puppy, that commitment could involve the next fifteen to twenty years, depending on the breed. Commitment includes taking the animal with you when you move, proper training of the animal, medical care, affection and spending time with animal to meet its needs for physical activity and psychological fulfillment on a daily basis. Like a child, pets require selfless commitment. If your pet needs to be let out at 3 A.M., are you willing to get out of bed? Living with a pet is not always convenient--it involves work. You will need to clean up after your pet. Be prepared for occasional property damage throughout your pet’s lifetime. You will also need to feed, water, exercise, and spend quality time with your pet(s) on a daily basis. We provide you with health and behavioral modification tips as well as other educational materials to help you care for your new pet(s).

All dogs and cats adopted from the Humane Society of South Coastal Georgia have been sterilized or are scheduled to be sterilized to ensure they are not contributing to the worldwide pet overpopulation problem.

We have a seven day return policy in place; however, this does not mean we will refund the adoption fee. We will apply the adoption fee to the care of our animals. If at any time during the first seven days a pet does not seem to be working in its new home, please contact the Humane Society as soon as possible. If you wish you return your new pet any time after the next seven days, we kindly ask for a surrender fee of $25

I have read and understand the information provided above.
