Benefit Bash Puts Pets in Spotlight

It’s that time of year again – the trimming of the tree, the hanging of the garlands and wreaths, and, of course, the Saydee and Satchel’s Best Friends Bash.
Since July, Stacy Bass and Jay Anderson of Straton Hall catering have been meeting with tent companies, bands, photographers and others to put on the fi fth installment of this grandiose event, named for their two dogs and, for the past two years, to benefit the Humane Society of South Coastal Georgia. In the past, the party has included women standing 10-feet tall, snow and a bar made of ice. “It takes six months to pull off this whole thing for one wonderful
night,” Bass said. Work aside, Bass and Anderson love staging the party. Their two dogs, Saydee and Satchel, the namesakes of the fundraising party, are dear to their hearts. “Jay and I both believe in the Humane Society and what they
do. We’re very animal-friendly people, and our pets have been an important part of our lives,” Bass said. Straton Hall itself, established 17 years ago, is named after one of their poodles. They name all their businesses after their pets, Bass said.
On Dec. 10, an expected 300 to 500 patrons will arrive at Brunswick Manor bed and breakfast for the party, based on a theme of the Frank Sinatra big band era.
Proceeds from ticket sales – $50 in advance and $65 at the door – will go to the Humane Society. “The money raised helps us provide food and medical care to the many adoptable pets in our facility,” said Leigh Anne Estrada, development director of the society. “We pay for all the food, litter and necessities, spay, neuter, vaccinate and microchip all the animals, and we provide their medical care.”
Estrada estimates that the society spent almost $30,000 last year on just medical costs. Fundraisers, particularly the Saydee and Satchel’s Best Friends Bash, are critical to the care of animals, she said. While Bass promises a spectacular surprise sure to keep guests entertained, Estrada says a special announcement
will greatly benefi t the Humane Society. “It’s been one of the most
memorable parties in my life,” she said. “They go so over the top with everything. It’s truly amazing. You will not forget it. People are still talking about last year’s
event.”
