12 Strays of Christmas

A partridge in pear tree might be hard to swing this Christmas. But there are plenty of more accessible animals that would be great gifts for one's true love.
They can be found at Humane Society of South Coastal Georgia, where plenty of good dogs and cats are waiting for homes.
April McEwan, adoption specialist at the society, cautions however that there are a few things to consider before adopting a pet.
"Dogs and cats require care, attention, treatment, exercise and play. Research regarding potential breed types, pet personalities, energy levels should be done prior to choosing a dog or cat," she said.
Before giving a pet as a gift, it's crucial to make sure that it would be a welcomed addition to a household. It is important to know whether or not a person or a family can afford a pet and is able to care for it.
McEwan says a lifestyle check should also be done.
"To name a few, such things to consider involve: Making good matches based on their children, do they have a fenced backyard or are they able to potty walk frequently, are they willing to train the dog/cat and work with obedience trainers, are they financially able to provide the needed food and health care for their new pet, are they able and willing to take the time to train, exercise or play with their dog/cat, as needed?"
After careful consideration is completed, it is time to choose a pet. Here are our 12 Strays of Christmas that would be loving pets for anyone:
Dillion This 3-year-old yellow retriever mix is full of love and readily gives affection. Found walking along Altama Avenue in Brunswick, he will gladly lay his head in anyone's lap while being petted. Dillion is great with children. He is very strong and full of energy.
Ester This sweet girl is a black lab mix, about 10 months old. She was found in a parking lot. She is very playful and loves water. She'd be a great beach dog.
Kizzie This is one affectionate kitty. Kizzie loves to be held. She has a moderate energy level, which makes her good with children and other cats.
Lucky A brown lab mix, this girl is very active. She loves to play with other dogs, people and toys. Lucky would thrive in a fenced in yard where she can run - a lot. She's been spayed and is up-to-date on all medications as well as heartworm prevention.
Sasha An older shepherd mix, Sasha has a sad story. She was living with a family that had to give her up, because they could no longer care for her. She's well-behaved and is housebroken. She is great with children and loves to play. Sasha has a moderate energy level and would be a great indoor dog.
Suzi This is a young dalmation-hound mix. Another surrendered dog, she loves water and would be perfect for an active family that enjoys walking or running on the beach. She already knows how to stop, shake and sit.
Rambo This is a low-energy cat who was brought to the Humane Society when he was 2 years old. His owners had to surrender him because they were moving, back in 2008. An agreeable cat, he gets along well with children, dogs and other cats. He is easy going and is a bit shy.
Bowser This hound mix was found running loose. And running is actually one of his favorite activities. He would love to join a family on hiking trips, walking the beach or just hanging out. He will be a loyal friend.
Jackie This kitty is a barn cat in training. Though she doesn't mind a little petting, Jackie prefers to be adored from afar. Ideally, she could have both indoor and outdoor access.
Mittens When Mittens was brought to in as a stray, he arrived with his siblings. Because he was a little more timid than the others, he was not adopted. A fluffy kitty, he's a bit wary of new people, but warms up quickly. While he does not like to be held, Mittens loves to have his head scratched. He would be a great porch cat with an indoor and outdoor lifestyle.
Miu Miu A particular cat, Miu Miu, is a plump black and white feline with golden eyes. She loves to have her head rubbed, but dislikes being picked up. Miu Miu is declawed and this makes her a bit feisty when it comes to other cats. She'd make a good only child. Miu Miu does enjoy sleeping and rolling in catnip.
Pumpkin Although she doesn't mind being petted, Pumpkin prefers to go to a home where she can live primarily outdoors. Although she doesn't want to be strictly an outdoor cat, she would love to have a cat door with access to both.
