The Humane Society of South Coastal Georgia says its low cost vaccination clinic is an important service to the community. “People have to understand that it’s the law to have your pet vaccinated,” said Lynn Heth, a veterinary assistant at the Humane Society. “We’re offering this public service at a discount to help people who otherwise can’t afford it.” The Humane Society on U.S. 17 will offer the discount rabies vaccination and microchip clinic to the public from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. today. The clinic is offered four times a year. A pet can receive the three-year vaccination only after it has received the one-year rabies vaccination, she said. A one-year rabies shot is $10, and a three-year shot is $15. Another service being offered today is microchipping, which can be invaluable when a pet is lost. “It’s really great to be able to locate your animal if something goes wrong,” Heth said. The Humane Society has serviced up to as many as 150 pets during past clinics. The clinic operates on a fi rst-come, fi rst-served basis. “Getting these shots are important not only to protect your pet, but for your health and safety as well,” Heth said. “Some can’t afford vaccinations or vet services. This is a way to help everyone get the puppy and kitty shots that they need.” The Humane Society will accept cash, check or credit card for the services today. Dogs are treated outside, while their feline counterparts are treated inside the facility. While visiting, the Humane Society invites visitors to take a peek at its new facility, located behind the original building and slated for a possible November completion.
