Couple Remembering with a Donation

Sea Island may be a lavish retreat for
rich and famous, but there is another world
there, too. It’s one that is hidden by the live
oaks and luxury cars – it’s a world of Sea
Island cats.
And of all of them, the most famous
was Mr. Bad, a black and white feline who
won the hearts of Jane and Joe Fulcher. It
all started when the feral kitty wandered
into their garage around Christmas 1999.
While he was always in control, coming
and going as he pleased, he frequented
the warmth of the Fulchers’ household – a
place he was always welcome.
“He was fiercely independent, although
one time, he did drag himself into our garage
when he was very sick, knowing that
we would care for him,” Jane Fulcher said.
“He recuperated in a spare bedroom, but
when well, he declared his independence
again and proceeded to be very ‘Bad,’ teasing
dogs and cats from 7th Street to 18th
Street ... his kingdom.”
Mr. Bad’s life came to a tragic end in
2007, when he was hit by a car while crossing
the road.
“When he was struck by a car, he again
dragged himself home, but this time we
could not save him. Dr. Lisa Ryan eased
his pain, and tears come to our eyes when
we remember him,” she said.
But Mr. Bad’s life will be remembered
thanks to an incredibly generous donation
by the Fulchers. They recently donated
$100,000 to the Humane Society of South
Coastal Georgia in memory of one of their
favorite kitties.
“Some years ago, my father, Malcolm
Fraser, set aside some funds in a family
foundation, the Malcolm Fraser Foundation.
This was funded with stock in the
NAPA-Genuine Parts Company, of which
my father was one of the founders, and that
stock has proved to be a very successful investment,”
Jane Fulcher said. “Although the
Malcolm Fraser Foundation has a primary
interest in the problem of stuttering, like
the Stuttering Foundation which my father
also founded and of which I am now head,
the MFF charter is broad enough to allow
us to use it in support of other charitable
causes.”
The local humane society has always
been a charity of interest for the couple.
The Fulchers are proud to support the
group.
“Support of the humane society is
somewhat of a family tradition. The Humane
Society of Memphis was one of my
mother’s favorite charities. We were drawn
to the local humane society because it is
local, and we could see the need for compassionate
care of animals in the area. The
humane society has really done a fantastic
job over the years and now they can do
even more not only to rescue animals but
also to promote spay/neuter programs so
there are fewer homeless ones,” she said.
“We are especially interested in the feral
cats, but we are cognizant of the problem
of uncontrolled population. Through the
years we have arranged for the neutering
of probably 50 feral cats, and referred
many others to new owners who agreed to
neutering as a condition.”
The two have also given a framed portrait
of Mr. Bad to hang at the new facility
located on U.S. Highway 17, Brunswick.
For their part, the Fulchers take pride in
knowing that their donation will help to
keep their special boy alive forever.
“We love having the new feline facility
be dedicated to Mr. Bad,” she said.
